European Magarorsag (Hungary) - Matyo (Matyó) Silk Embroidered Textile Fragment

Matyo (Matyó) Silk Embroidered Textile Fragment from Magarorsag (Hungary). The type of embroidery featured here is called “MATYO” which is also the name of the region where the Matyo people live. They are famous for their embroidery work that is said to date back to either the 1600s or 1800s. The main field is decorated with birds and geometric figures on an embroidered net. The borders support the composition with flowers in the Matyo embroidery method. It survives in great condition. It could have been part of a larger embroidery. It has fine plain cotton backing.
