Central Asian Özbekistan (Uzbekistan) - Silk Embroidered Cizzax (Jizzakh) Suzani
$1,475.00
Silk Embroidered Suzani from Cizzax (Jizzakh), Özbekistan (Uzbekistan). Cizzax derives from the Sogdian word for a small castle, Dizak. The area was brutally destroyed by the Rus during their Türkistan invasion in the mid 19th century. Most Cizzax people had to run away to Şaxrisabz (Shahrisabz), Samarqand (Samarkand), Urgut, and even to Tåşkent (Tashkent). A Cizzax Sozana (Suzani) is characterized by cosmic and zoomorphic motifs. Almost all of them have a small amulet or heart shaped motif within their inner corners. This sample features saturated natural colors with fine silk embroidery on silk (though in such suzanis embroidery was usually done on cotton).
It is dated to the 19th century
