Middle Eastern Filästin (Palestine) - Şätweh (Shatweh) Headdress

SKU TOSHH-008
Price

$800.00

The Şätweh (شطوة) is a headdress from Filästin (Palestine) made in the shape of a tarboosh or fez. Made of padded layers of fabric, the front of it is often covered with coins and coral, signifying the fortune given by the groom on their wedding day. It is a status symbol for both the woman and her husband. This particular headdress is made of antique Tatriz (تطريز) from Filästin. The striped fabric is Ottoman-style Qutni (قطنی). The coins are silver Quruş (قروش) of various dates and denominations. Finally, the beads consist of genuine Mediterranean coral and blue glass. Exceptional revival art.
