While Osman is traditionally held to be from the Arabic name Uthman, it was ultimately chosen for its resemblance to Turkic *ɑtɑmɑn, essentially "father of fathers." Alternatively, it could be considered a corruption of the Turkic word. The second component, -oğlu, is from Turkic *ogul "son; offspring."
