Etymology

His name is variously recorded as:

Brahmi *bäysärä khotä läkä (𑀩𑀬𑁆𑀲𑀭 𑀔𑁄𑀢 𑀮𑀓),

Brahmi *bhäːräɳä (𑀪𑀸𑀭​𑀡),

Brahmi *väiʂräväɳäsyä (𑀯𑁃𑀱𑁆𑀭𑀯𑀡𑀲𑁆𑀬​)

All of the first components of his name seem to be attempts at transcribing Sanskrit vaişrävänä (वैश्रवण) or "All-hearing," another name for the Hindu god of wealth, Kuberä (कुबेर). However, given the various spellings in Brahmi, the word may have been pronounced as *bɑj[ʃ]ɨrɑvɑn(ɑ) by the Varxuna.

As for the second component, I suspect it is a truncated derivative or cognate of Sanskrit Kärkotäkä (कर्कोटक), a mythical Hindu king. It could also be a reference to Kotäräkä (कोटरक), a serpent named in the Great Bhärätä epic.

The third component, *läkä, is a truncated metaphasis of varxan or "khan of the Avars."
